Example Water Pump SOP

The following is one example of an SOP that follows best practices. A Hazard Assessment and Risk Mitigation (HIRA) would also be necessary to complete.

Purpose:

The purpose of this standard operating procedure is to ensure the safety of personnel performing maintenance on the Powerhouse RP-2000-HP municipal water pump by implementing proper lockout and tagout procedures.

Scope:

This document describes the steps required to properly lockout and tagout the Powerhouse RP-2000-HP municipal water pump to perform maintenance.

Responsibility:

It is the responsibility of the maintenance supervisor to ensure that all personnel follow the given steps and that the lockout and tagout procedures are properly implemented.

Procedure:

  1. Notify all personnel who may be affected by the maintenance activity.
  2. Identify all energy sources that must be controlled to perform maintenance on the Powerhouse RP-2000-HP municipal water pump.
  3. Before applying lockout devices, verify that the energy sources are de-energized by attempting to start the pump and confirming that it will not start.
  4. Apply lockout devices to each energy source identified in step 2. Ensure that lockout devices are properly attached and cannot be removed without the use of a key or other special tool.
  5. Once lockout devices are properly applied, tag the equipment with a “Do Not Operate” tag that includes the name of the authorized personnel who applied the lockout devices.
  6. Verify that the equipment is de-energized after applying lockout devices by using a voltage detector or testing each energy source. If any energy source is found to be energized, immediately remove lockout devices and re-verify the equipment is de-energized.
  7. Perform the necessary maintenance activities.
  8. Before removing lockout devices, inspect the work area to ensure that all tools and other objects have been removed and that the equipment is in safe working condition.
  9. Notify all personnel that lockout devices are about to be removed.
  10. Remove lockout devices and return energy sources to normal operating conditions.

Training and Communication:

All personnel involved in performing maintenance activities on the Powerhouse RP-2000-HP municipal water pump must be trained on the proper lockout and tagout procedures. Clear communication between personnel is required throughout the procedure to ensure the safety of all personnel involved.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Personnel must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during all maintenance activities. PPE must be selected based on the hazards present and must be worn in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Additional Safety Precautions:

Additional safety precautions may be required depending on the specific maintenance activity being performed. The maintenance supervisor is responsible for determining the appropriate safety precautions and ensuring that all personnel follow them.
